"Countdown" on the Saigon River
I am Nguyen Van Hung, a department manager of an electronics company in Ho Chi Minh City. I was busy with multinational meetings and factory inspections every day until the dry season of 2024, when persistent back pain and hematuria broke my busy and orderly life. The puncture results of the local hospital were like a basin of ice water - advanced prostate cancer, bone metastasis. This news was like a bolt from the blue, pulling me back to reality from my busy work.
Hanoi Hospital's "helplessness"
Vietnamese doctors recommended immediate traditional radiotherapy, but after 30 irradiations, my rectum was severely ulcerated and my weight dropped by 15 kg. The most painful thing was the severe pain caused by bone metastasis. Even with the maximum dose of painkillers, I still couldn't sleep all night. My wife secretly contacted the Chinese patient group and found that most of the radiotherapy equipment in Vietnam was old models, and the lack of accuracy led to a high incidence of side effects. Faced with these difficulties, we felt unprecedented despair.
“The turning point of life may lie in the hope that crosses national borders. As long as we don’t give up looking for light, the darkness will eventually be illuminated.” - Ruan Wenxiong
The "Life Code" of the Sino-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce
The turning point came from a gathering of the Sino-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi. An entrepreneur who was receiving treatment in Guangzhou showed his treatment record: interventional therapy sent a catheter to the tumor blood vessels through the femoral artery, and the drug-loaded microspheres accurately released chemotherapy drugs like "directional missiles". During the video consultation, experts from Guangzhou R&F Hospital used animation to demonstrate: the diameter of the microspheres is only 0.02 mm, which can block tumor nutrition and continuously release drugs for up to 2 weeks. This innovative technology gives us new hope.
Zhujiang New Town's "Miracle Treatment"
In October 2024, I arrived in Guangzhou with Vietnamese agarwood bracelets and painkillers. The treatment experience overturned my cognition. Interventional surgery: cannulation from the femoral artery under local anesthesia, 3 hours to complete the treatment, and you can take a walk the next day. This minimally invasive surgery not only reduces the burden on the body, but also greatly shortens the recovery time; drug-loaded microspheres: the tumor volume shrinks by 10% every week after surgery, and the pain gradually disappears. The drugs in the microspheres can act precisely on the tumor site, avoiding the side effects of systemic chemotherapy; humanistic care: the hospital provides a 24-hour standby Vietnamese translator, and the cafeteria also provides Vietnamese pho and drip coffee. These details made me feel the warmth of home in a foreign country.
Two months after treatment, bone scans showed calcification of metastatic lesions, and PSA dropped from 89 to 1.2. Now I can climb the Ho Chi Minh City Financial Tower alone, and I can also accompany my daughter to learn traditional dance on weekends. All these changes are due to advanced interventional therapy and the careful care of medical staff.
