"Health Countdown" on the Bank of the Red River
I am Nguyen Thi Phuong, a project manager at a technology company in Hanoi. Every day, I am busy with code debugging and customer meetings, and my life is tight and orderly. However, the rainy season in 2024 brought me unprecedented challenges. Continuous low-grade fever and dull pain in the right upper abdomen gradually broke my peaceful life. The results of the CT scan at the local hospital were like a bolt from the blue - advanced liver cancer, the tumor diameter reached 6 cm, and it had invaded the intrahepatic bile duct.
"Difficult Breakthrough" in Ho Chi Minh City Hospital
Faced with such a diagnosis, I felt desperate. Vietnamese doctors recommended laparotomy, but during the operation, they found that the tumor was in a dangerous position and could not be removed, so palliative chemotherapy was the only option. After three intravenous chemotherapy sessions, my physical condition deteriorated sharply, and I developed severe bone marrow suppression, with my white blood cell count dropping to 1.2×10⁹/L. I was out of breath even when going upstairs, and the most tormenting thing was the persistent dull pain in the liver area. I still had trouble falling asleep even after taking painkillers until I had stomach bleeding. My quality of life dropped sharply, and I almost lost hope in life.
“Life should not be limited by geography. As long as we don’t give up looking for hope, we can rekindle the light of life even across borders.” - Nguyen Thi Phuong
"New Hope for Life" of the Sino-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce
At this time, a turning point appeared. Through the Sino-Vietnamese Youth Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi, I met Mr. Lin, the vice president. He shared his treatment experience at Guangzhou R&F Hospital: "Chinese doctors used interventional embolization to "starve" the tumor, and then used immunotherapy to activate the body's own anti-cancer cells!" This news gave me a glimmer of hope. Afterwards, I communicated with the Chinese medical team through video consultation. They used AR technology to demonstrate the treatment plan in detail: interventional therapy blocked the blood supply to the tumor by injecting embolic agents into the hepatic artery, and immunotherapy customized the PD-1 plan based on genetic testing to accurately kill residual cancer cells. This advanced treatment method rekindled my hope.
"Journey of Rebirth"
In November 2024, I arrived in Guangzhou with Vietnamese lotus tea and painkillers, and began my journey of rebirth. The whole treatment process is full of technology. Interventional surgery: Under local anesthesia, the doctor cannulated the femoral artery, and the real-time DSA image during the operation accurately located the tumor to ensure the accurate injection of the embolic agent. Just 6 hours after the operation, I was able to drink a bowl of delicious beef pho; immunotherapy: weekly injection of personalized PD-1 drugs, and combined with Chinese medicine acupoint plastering to relieve fatigue symptoms. This comprehensive treatment method not only targets the tumor itself, but also focuses on improving the overall quality of life of patients; cultural care: The hospital provides full Vietnamese translation services, and the ward is also equipped with lotus decorations and Vietnamese Buddhist scriptures, which makes me feel the warmth and kindness of home.
After more than half a year of treatment, MRI showed that the tumor was completely necrotic, and the AFP level dropped from 1800 to 15. Now, I can climb the steps of the Hanoi Temple of Literature alone, and I can accompany my daughter to learn to play the monochord on weekends. The quality of life has been significantly improved, and I have regained the joy of life.
