"Health Alerts" in Multinational Projects
I am Maria Rodriguez, a project manager for a construction company in Manila. While in charge of the Cebu Cross-Sea Bridge project, I experienced dull pain in the right upper abdomen and loss of appetite for three months. Due to my busy work schedule, I always attributed these symptoms to work fatigue. However, it was not until I vomited coffee ground-like liquid one morning that I realized the seriousness of the problem. The emergency CT showed: advanced liver cancer, the tumor invaded the portal vessels.
"Limited options" at Manila Hospital
The doctor in the Philippines told me that due to the dangerous location of the tumor, surgical removal was not possible and I could only try traditional chemotherapy. After four intravenous chemotherapy sessions, I developed severe oral ulcers and bone marrow suppression, with platelets as low as 20,000/μL, and even holding a pen to sign became difficult. The most painful thing was the persistent colic in the liver area. The interval between Demerol injections was shortened from 4 hours to 2 hours, and my quality of life dropped sharply.
“The resilience of life is far beyond imagination. Even if the disease is fierce, we must use technology and wisdom to carve out a way for ourselves.” - Maria Rodriguez
The "Life Key" of the China-Philippines Chamber of Commerce
The turning point came from the Manila China-Philippines Youth Chamber of Commerce. President Chen shared his treatment experience at Guangzhou R&F Hospital: "Chinese doctors used liquid nitrogen at minus 196℃ to freeze the tumor to death, and combined it with Chinese medicine for precise conditioning!" This news gave me a glimmer of hope. Through video consultation, the Chinese team introduced their treatment methods in detail. They used holographic projection to demonstrate cryoablation: the probe was inserted into the tumor under ultrasound guidance, and an ice ball was formed within 15 minutes to kill cancer cells; the targeted therapy of traditional Chinese and Western medicine was based on the results of genetic testing, combined with Chinese medicine extracts to inhibit tumor angiogenesis, thereby achieving better treatment effects.
R&F Hospital's "Ice Breaking Operation"
In June 2024, I flew to Guangzhou with dried mangoes and painkillers from the Philippines. At Guangzhou R&F Hospital, I experienced a treatment process full of technology and humanistic care. Cryosurgery: Under local anesthesia, the doctor percutaneously punctured and completed the ablation of the tumor within 30 minutes. The night after the operation, I was able to eat roast goose, and my recovery was very ideal; Combination of Chinese and Western Medicine: The Chinese medicine doctor used acupuncture to relieve my bloating symptoms, and the nutritionist customized a Filipino-style meal containing turmeric according to my physical condition, which not only met my taste needs but also promoted recovery; Cultural adaptation: The hospital provided English and Tagalog translation services and accompanied me throughout the various examinations and treatments. The ward is also equipped with a Filipino folk music player, which allows me to feel the warmth of home in a foreign country.
After two months of treatment, the MRI showed that the tumor was completely necrotic, and the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) dropped from 2500 to 28. Now, I can complete the project inspection alone, and I can go diving in Boracay with my family on weekends to enjoy a good life.
